Remember the post where I said the hardest part was waiting? The wait is over. I didn’t pass N3.

And honestly? It’s okay. I’m having fun learning Japanese, and that matters more to me than any certificate.
The numbers
73 out of 180. Passing takes 95, with at least 19 of 60 in each section.
- Language Knowledge (vocabulary and grammar): 29 / 60
- Reading: 21 / 60
- Listening: 23 / 60
I cleared the minimum in every section. Nothing fell apart; I just came up 22 points short overall. That’s a gap I can close.
What the breakdown says
The score report splits Language Knowledge into two grades: vocabulary got a B, grammar a C.
That made me smile, because it’s exactly what my study notes already say. The words have been sticking, thanks to hundreds of hours of game menus, variety shows and idol captions. The grammar is where I keep tripping: particles, causatives, building my own sentences instead of just reading them. The exam didn’t surprise me. It just confirmed where the fun gets to go next.
Why I’m not worried
I didn’t start learning Japanese to pass a test. I started because I wanted to understand the shows, the songs and the games I love, and that part is working. I read Palworld menus without thinking now. I laugh at variety show captions before the translation would even load. I spent 36 hours in a Final Fantasy demo because I kept stopping to look things up, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
If I turned studying into a grind just to chase a pass, I’d probably lose the thing that’s kept me going. So I won’t.
What’s next
Same approach, a little more grammar. I’ll keep learning the way I actually like to: in bursts, through things I enjoy. When a retake comes around, I’ll give it a real go, and if I pass, great.
Either way, the quest continues.
