Welcome to my save file.
I’m not here to be an expert at anything. I’m here because I can’t stop starting new quests. Learning Japanese, disappearing into anime and manga, building things nobody asked for, retaking a JLPT exam I didn’t pass the first time, following idols I have no business caring this much about; none of it is the “main quest.” That’s life itself, the one running in the background whether I log in or not.
This is where I track the side quests.
Some are active. Some are on hold while I deal with something else. Some actually get finished, which still surprises me every time. I’m not chasing a perfect completion rate, just logging the run as it happens. I work in cycles: all in on one thing until the energy runs out, then onto the next while it recovers. So if a side quest goes quiet for a while, it’s resting, not abandoned.

Class: Blue Mage
In Final Fantasy, a Blue Mage doesn’t learn from a spellbook. They learn by facing others, picking up a skill from each encounter and making it their own. That’s how I’ve learned almost everything: Japanese from variety shows and game menus, web development from whatever a client needs next.
My unique skill is the one I’m proudest of. I’m good at spotting what’s good in people, often before they see it themselves, and I like being the one who helps it catch. If we’ve crossed paths, there’s a fair chance I picked up something from you.
The side quests
Each bar in the window above counts the entries logged in that side quest. Here’s where each one lives:
- Nihongrind: the Japanese learning grind. Took N3 in July 2026, didn’t pass, having too much fun to stop. Expect messy notes, small wins, and probably some complaining about grammar points.
- Otaku Journal: anime and manga, reactions and rambles, no spoiler-free promises.
- Backlog: whatever I’m playing, replaying, or never finishing.
- Workshop: the things I build: client websites, specrival.com, this site’s own theme, and whatever new project I convince myself I have time for. It doubles as my portfolio.
- Slope Stroll: Sakamichi series news and idol culture thoughts.
- Marginalia: personal blog posts and poetry, the unfiltered notes in the margins. Including the poems I wrote between 2004 and 2010.
- Party of 3: fatherhood, told from someone still figuring it out one day at a time.
- Stat Allocation: health and wellness, because none of the other quests matter much if this bar hits zero.
Who’s behind the save file
I’m James Callos. For years I kept my interests in separate rooms: Wotakunai for the gaming and otaku side, my own name for the professional side, and Gambitworks for the company I run. This site is where they finally share a floor plan. Everything from the old Wotakunai blog now lives here in the Wotakunai Archive, going back to 2017.
I also make things along the way like cliparts, and eventually more over at SideQuesthingsShop. Consider it loot from the grind.
No single label fits everything I’m into, so I stopped trying to find one. This is just the log of someone leveling up in public, one side quest at a time.
